The majority of the Washington Redskins stood and locked arms on Sunday Night Football during the national anthem.

On Sunday Night Football from Washington, DC on a day when a large portion of the NFL was protesting in the NFL, the vast majority of the Washington Redskins stood and locked arms during the playing of the national anthem.

This gesture ends a full day of protests throughout the NFL as teams kneeled or locked arms during the national anthem. The protests come in response to Donald Trump’s recent comments pertaining to players who choose to kneel during the national anthem.

While in Alabama this weekend the president posed the thought of how great it would be (with some vulgarity) for NFL players to get fired for “disrespecting our flag”.  The comments were made at a campaign event for Senator Luther Strange in Huntsville.

One of the more prominent protests of the day was from the Pittsburgh Steelers, who chose not to take the field during the playing of the national anthem, attempting to present a neutral response to the protests. As for the Redskins, the majority stood with locked arms, while a few kneeled:

In response to the Sunday’s protests in the league, the President of the United States tweeted the following:

Unfortunately, that action will not take place. The right to free speech is one that is protected legally and physically by the brave men and women of this country. Yes, they protect this country so that people can protest it.

There are a lot of things to be upset about nowadays. How we conduct ourselves as Americans on how we respond to the things that we deem incorrect or unfair is an important responsibility everyone must manage. However, in the safety and security of conducting such a protest, we must remember that everyone isn’t going to agree with your view on an issue.

Everyone is not required to stand up and cheer your cause, or kneel with you on your quest to make a statement.

That, my friends, is freedom The NFL won’t stop playing football after today. It is still the country’s great escape from the current national narratives of the day. So relax, and watch football.
