The Jacksonville Jaguars faced the New York Jets on Sunday, Oct. 1 in Week 4 of the 2017 NFL season. Here are the highlights from the game.

There were some who were hopeful about the Jacksonville Jaguars coming into the 2017 NFL season. After three weeks, it seems that hope was well placed. The Jags sit at 2-1 and were presented with a fantastic chance to move to 3-1. That’s because Week 4 saw them head up the East Coast to face the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.

Early on, it appeared like the Jags were about to cruise. They got the ball early and went 10 plays for 61 yards as Leonard Fournette found the end zone on a pass from Blake Bortles. However, their vaunted defense then let them down. Bilal Powell got loose after some poor linebacker play and took a run 75 yards to the house. The two teams then traded field goals in the second quarter, going into halftime tied 10-10.

However, the Jets didn’t waste much time in the second half to let Jacksonville known they weren’t going way. They broke off another massive run, this one from Elijah McGuire for 69 yards, that was taken to the house. When Chandler Catanzaro added a field goal at the end of the third quarter, that put the New York lead at 20-10.

That’s when the Jaguars defense got strong and made a big play. They forced a fumble in the middle of the field and second-year linebacker Myles Jack scooped it up and took it 81 yards to the end zone. They then stopped the Jets again and got the ball back. They thought they’d taken the lead with about a minute left, but a holding call took away Fournette’s second score. Thus, the Jags settled for a field goal and ultimately went to overtime.

The extra period was quite painful. There were five punts in all, including three three-and-outs in that span. However, when the Jags punted for the final time, a taunting penalty cost them valuable yardage. That allowed the Jets to settle in Catanzaro’s range, and he nailed the game-winner to give the Jets their second-straight victory, as shocking as that may be.

The Jets and Jaguars have been perennial bottom-feeders, but their paths have no diverged. This one didn’t look like much of a contest from the onset, especially with the way Jacksonville’s defense has been playing. However, the Jets snuck up and scored a win for the second-straight week.
