Cardinals vs. Eagles: Highlights, game tracker and more
The Arizona Cardinals faced the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Oct. 8 in Week 5 of the 2017 NFL season. Here are the highlights from the game.
After the year from hell in 2016, the hope was that the Arizona Cardinals would bounce back this season. Yet, the unfortunate breaks bled over into this season as well, when David Johnson went down with an injury that sidelined him for much of the year. Even still, they’d won their last two games in tough fashion. That led them to the City of Brotherly Love for a matchup with the NFC East-leading Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
It looked pretty clear right from the start on Sunday that the Eagles were the class of this game — and perhaps somewhere close to being the class of the NFC. After forcing a three-and-out opening the game on defense, they went 10 plays for 54 yards when Carson Wentz came up big early with a 15-yard touchdown to Trey Burton. However, that was just the start.
Philly forced the Cardinals to punt again, but Kenjon Barner made a monster play as he was able to take the ball into the red zone. It was light work for the Eagles as Wentz again struck, this time finding Zach Ertz. The defense forced another punt, and again the home team was able to capitalize as Wentz found Torrey Smith for a deep touchdown to give them 21 points in the first quarter.
That Eagles offense slowed down for the rest of the first half, while the Cardinals tried to find life. They were able to score early in the second quarter to narrow the deficit. Then, when they picked off Wentz late in the period, they put together a quick 47-yard drive to get into field goal range — but it was blocked to end the half.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia came back out hot and got into field goal range as they were able to convert. The defense came up big again as they forced a three-and-out, but the Eagles wasted little time piling it on as Wentz found Nelson Agholor for a long score, the quarterback’s fourth of the day.
Though the Eagles added a field goal late, this one was out of hand early for the Cardinals and it stayed that way as Philly moved to an impressive 4-1 on the year.

Though the Cardinals entered this matchup at 2-2, they looked far less impressive than the Eagles had to this point. As such, it seemed like a potential runaway game for the home team. However, Arizona was never going to lie down easy, thus we had ourselves an interesting matchup.
