New York Jets: Todd Bowles should be kept around for 2018
Barring a horrible collapse in 2017, the New York Jets must keep head coach Todd Bowles around in 2018.
Continuity is the key to success in the NFL. Keep one voice in charge, and you will succeed. The New York Jets will find that out if they keep Todd Bowles around in 2018.
Imagine a scenario in which an NFL team today finished three games under .500 in three consecutive seasons. The media and fans would be calling for that coach’s head by the end of the third season.
Well, that’s where the Jets found themselves at the end of the 1965 season. They were on their third head coach in their first six seasons, and the head coach was also the team’s general manager. They held on to that coach, and he kept his role as general manager. By the end of the 1968 season, Weeb Ewbank had led the New York Jets to victory in Super Bowl III.

By far, the 1980s was probably the Jets best decade as a whole. It wasn’t a huge roller coaster like other decades. The Jets had five winning seasons and two others that they were 7-9. The key to that decade was that they only had two head coaches. It’s the only decade in team history in which they had fewer than three head coaches, and one of the coaches, Walt Michaels, unexpectedly resigned, siting the fact he needed to take care of his terminally ill mother.
Now, let’s move to the present. Despite a rocky start to 2017, Bowles seems to have the Jets heading in the right direction, and barring a total collapse, the team could build off the momentum of this season for the future.

This is a young team, and all fans can really hope for is incremental improvement from week to week. Since the second half of the game against the Oakland Raiders, they have shown that. This season isn’t about the ultimate win-loss record. Based on what has happened so far this season, Bowles deserves at least one more season to right the ship from the 4-12 disaster of 2016.
