Green Bay Packers: Aaron Jones’ emergence adds to offense
By Hunter Noll
The Green Bay Packers already had a strong offense coming into Week 5. A big day from Aaron Jones suggests that they could have even more weapons though.
The Green Bay Packers rushing attack is usually somewhat of a question mark. You never really know what you’re going to get. With Ty Montgomery and Jamaal Williams both out for Week 5, this was the case even more than usual.
Rookie Aaron Jones seemed to be more than up to the task, though. In his first career start, Jones picked up 125 yards and a touchdown on just 19 rushes. Meanwhile, he caught one pass for nine yards.
Although this was a fantastic performance, Jones isn’t about to completely dethrone the players in front of him with one game. He can however earn himself more playing time. With that time, he can continue to carve out a larger role. In the future, who knows where that will lead him. For now though, Jones has still changed the offense — even if it’s just a little.
While Montgomery gives the Packers an elite pass catcher out of the backfield, they don’t possess much of a run game. There wasn’t much for Green Bay to rely on should the passing attack falter. This was due to the fact that Montgomery’s main threat wasn’t when he was handed the ball. Jones on the other hand, is best in that situation.
In fact, in 14 less carries, Jones has 22 more yards and the same amount of touchdowns as Montgomery. Meanwhile, they’ve both picked up 10 first downs on the ground. Montgomery’s dual threat ability makes him extremely valuable. Sometimes the Packers will need someone who can grind on the ground and wear out a defense though. It appears Jones can be that running back.

Obviously we’ll still need to see more from the rookie back to garner more of a sample size. However, expect to see Aaron Jones continue to get some work every game, no matter what the health of the other running backs are. Through one game of relief work and one star, he’s earned that without question.
