9. Sammy Baugh

The Titans of New York (as they were called then) made a call to Abilene, TX to get their first head coach. It was placed to the soon-to-be Pro Football Hall of Famer Sammy Baugh, who made his mark with the Washington Redskins as a quarterback, punter, and defensive back.

His career with the Titans actually started off well, with wins over the Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, and Dallas Texans (the team that would change its name and later become the Kansas City Chiefs). They proved to be no match against the AFL’s Western Division though, because they lost twice to both the Raiders and Chargers, and finished the season 7-7 in second place in the AFL’s Eastern Division.

The 1961 season was a roller coaster one as well, because they couldn’t solve the Chargers or the Oilers, but won seven games against the rest of the AFL. The Titans finished their 1961 campaign with the same record as 1960, but this time in third place in the Eastern Division.

Baugh ultimately left his post as Titans head coach after the 1961 season. He is one of only two head coaches in the history of the franchise to finish his Titans/Jets head coaching run with a winning percentage of .500 or better.
