The San Francisco 49ers faced the Washington Redskins on Sunday, Oct. 15 in Week 6 of the 2017 NFL season. Here are highlights of the game.
The Washington Redskins hosted the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday afternoon at FedEx Field. Washington, at 2-2, returned from an early bye week and will be without the services of All-Pro cornerback Josh Norman. Meanwhile, the 49ers headed to Washington on Sunday looking for the first win of the 2017 season.
San Francisco looked very much like a winless team on defense right out of the gate. To start the first quarter, they allowed the Redskins to move down the field quickly. Kirk Cousins found Josh Doctson for the 11-yard touchdown pass. Admittedly, the defense stepped up for the rest of the period. However, the offense was abysmal as Brian Hoyer struggled tremendously.
In the second quarter, Washington came out and started putting it on them again. They used a 10-play drive to put another six points on the board, finding Samaje Perine on a pass to move ahead 14-0. With the 49ers offense still looking anemic, Kyle Shanahan yanked Hoyer and put in rookie C.J. Beathard. He came up empty on his first drive and Washington added a field goal. However, Beathard ended the first half with an 11-play, 75-yard drive for a touchdown, put in by Carlos Hyde on the run.
San Fran then came out with another decent drive, adding a field goal to their total to start the second half. They almost brought it closer after a big defensive stop, but missed the field goal. However, they forced a big fumble deep in Washington territory that allowed for a one-play, one-yard touchdown drive, Hyde rushing it in again.
With the game tied, though, Cousins and the Redskins stepped up. He led a 16-play drive for a field goal. They then got the ball back after a punt, and Cousins went nine plays and 84 yards as the quarterback ran it in himself. However, the Niners weren’t about to lay down just yet. Beathard came up big with a six-play 75-yard drive that ended with a touchdown heave to Aldrick Robinson.
The 49ers defense then forced a three-and-out, giving them a shot to win. However, as they tried to get into field goal range, the rookie Beathard threw an interception that ultimately caused them to fall short yet again.
