The Los Angeles Chargers faced the Oakland Raiders on October 15th in Week 6 of the 2017 NFL season. Here are highlights from the game.

What a crazy five weeks of football it has been for the Los Angeles Chargers and Oakland Raiders to start the 2017 regular season. While Oakland is coming into this AFC West showdown with three-straight losses, the Chargers won their first game one week ago against the New York Giants. Needless to say, there’s definitely a gap in confidence between these two squads heading into Sunday afternoon.

As both teams looked to gain footing on their seasons, neither saw the immediate start that they wanted. The Chargers got the ball first, but were sent off the field after four plays and then a punt. Meanwhile, Derek Carr came in and threw an interception on his second play since coming back from the injury. However, LA was unable to capitalize as Nick Novak missed the field goal.

That’s when Carr and the Raiders found some life. They drove down the field on an 11-play, 62-yard drive before the quarterback found Michael Crabtree. The veteran receiver then made a fantastic move after the grab and got inside the pylon for the score. Oakland’s defense then stepped up to force a turnover on downs.

Three-straight punts then slowed the flow of the game a bit, but Philip Rivers and company broke that up. They pieced together a beautiful 15-play, 82-yard drive that Melvin Gordon capped off with a touchdown. With limited time, though, Carr and the Raiders answered. The offense drove down the field and allowed Giorgio Tavecchio to kick a field goal right as the first half expired.

Things didn’t look promising for Oakland out of the half, though, as a pass from Carr was tipped up in the air and picked off. However, the Chargers couldn’t capitalize and had to punt. The Raiders answered with a punt of their own, and then forced a big fumble on defense. With that said, they too were unable to make up for it as they turned the ball over on downs.

That wasn’t an opportunity the Bolts would let slip away as they drove 59 yards for another Gordon touchdown. But the silver and black showed their resilience with an answer. They got Cordarrelle Patterson in space on the ensuing drive and he took it to the house. But a missed extra point off a bad snap made it only 16-14.

Missing the PAT proved to be a death blow. After each team punted, the Chargers got the ball back and drove down the field while milking clock. They got deep into the red zone and turned to Novak. The veteran forgot his miss from earlier and nailed the winner as time expired, handing Oakland their fourth-straight loss.

Whoever wins this game in Week 6 will have sole possession of third place in the AFC West. While that may not seem like a huge accomplishment, the third-place AFC West team could be fighting for the last Wild-Card seed come late-December. Needless to say, a win of Sunday would create some huge momentum moving forward. Game on.
