Patriots vs. Jets: Highlights, game tracker and more
The New England Patriots faced the New York Jets on Sunday, Oct. 15 in Week 6 of the 2017 NFL season. Here are the highlights from the game.
Some were predicting that the New York Jets to have a winless 2017 season at the start of the year. However, they already turned that on its head. In fact, they entered Week 6 with an identical record to the New England Patriots, their longtime AFC East foes. Both at 3-2, they prepared to go to war on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.
Even with the Jets playing great football, it was still a bit of a shock to see how this game started. New York came out of the gate firing, driving right down thte field on a 13-play, 88-yard drive that culminated in an Austin Seferian-Jenkins touchdown. They then forced the Patriots to punt, but were unable to capitalize as they went three-and-out.
However, the defense came up huge as Darron Lee hit Mike Gillislee and forced a huge fumble on the play that he then recovered. The Jets indeed did capitalize on that play. They came up with another long drive, this one going 78 yards on seven plays, that resulted in a 31-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Kerley, putting Gang Green ahead 14-0.
Unfortunately, the Jets offense then began to stall in a big way. Making things harder to deal with, the Patriots started getting into a rhythm on offense. After trading three-and-outs, the Pats went on a nine-play, 93-yard drive that ended with a Dion Lewis touchdown run. New England’s defense then forced another three-and-out, but Tom Brady threw an interception on their ensuing drive. yet, the Jets failed to take advantage, going three-and-out again.
The miscues continued, however, for New England as they missed a field goal. But New York committed the cardinal sin as they gave the ball away with an interception thrown to Malcolm Butler. Brady was able to recover, first finding Brandin Cooks deep and then hitting Rob Gronkowski for a touchdown to tie it up at halftime.
Brady and the Patriots came out of the locker room firing, marching 75 yards on the opening drive and finding Gronk for another touchdown. McCown then gave the ball away again to kill a promising drive, which New England used to kick a field goal and push their lead to 24-14.
From there, the Jets tried their hardest, but could only manage a field goal on offense. Though their defense stepped up, they just were unable to find the groove they started with offensively, thus giving them their third loss of the season.
