Chiefs vs. Raiders: Highlights, game tracker and more
By Randy Gurzi
The Kansas City Chiefs faced the Oakland Raiders on Thursday, Oct. 19 in Week 7 of the 2017 NFL season. Here are highlights from the game.
It wasn’t too long ago the Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs were both looking like powerhouses. They both were looking sharp with wins in Week 1 and Week 2, but then the Raiders went on the road for a Sunday Night Football game in Week 3 against the Washington Redskins.
Things looked like they were going to devolve into an offensive shootout early on in Oakland. The Chiefs started with the football and went down the field, but ultimately settled for three points. At home, though, the Raiders offense came out of the gate hot. They went 75 yards in only four plays before Derek Carr found Amari Cooper for the score.
Not to be denied, the Chiefs answered the call with a touchdown of their own as Alex Smith found tight end Travis Kelce. However, the Raiders had an answer of their own as Carr and Cooper connected for the second time in the first quarter to put Oakland up, 14-10.
There was also a big moment when Oakland ran a quarterback draw for Carr as Marcus Peters came up with a late hit. A scuffle broke out and brought Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch off the bench. He came to break up the fight, but pushed a referee in the process and got ejected.
The action then slowed down somewhat from there as both teams punted, but the Chiefs did score on a wild drive as they went 99 yards in only three plays for a touchdown. Meanwhile, they added a field goal as well as the Raiders missed two field goals to make it 20-14 in favor of Kansas City at halftime.
Fired up after having lost four-straight, though, the Raiders responded with an eight-play touchdown drive when they started with the ball. That drive was capped of by DeAndre Washington fighting his way into the end zone. However, the defense for the silver and black couldn’t deliver as a tipped ball fell right to Albert Wilson for a big touchdown to give the lead back to the visitors. The teams would then trade field goals with the score at 30-24 to set up a wild ending.
Oakland’s defense bent, but didn’t break and forced a punt with about six minutes left. However, the offense had nothing going, and they went three-and-out. With it being gut-check time for the home defense, they stepped up and finished Smith off with a Khalil Mack, Denico Autry sack. That gave the Raiders one more shot and a crazy drive.
Starting 85 yards away, Carr worked his way down the field with a few big plays, including a strike to Jared Cook on fourth down. On third-and-10 from the 29-yard line, he then found Cook again with a nasty throw that looked to be a touchdown. However, he was ruled down at the 1-yard line. Thus, he tried a fade on the next play with eight seconds left (following a 10-second runoff). However, Michael Crabtree pushed off and was called for offensive pass interference.
That gave them what we thought was one more play from the 11-yard line. He looked for Cook again, and the tight end dropped an easy score — but there was holding on KC, giving Oakland a free play. Again with the play, Carr looked for Cordarrelle Patterson, but he went out the back of the end zone for no catch. Yet he was held too, giving one more free play.
This time, they took a different route. Carr rolled out to his left and fired a bullet on the money to Crabtree at the pylon. He hauled it in, stayed in bounds and got the six points. Giorgio Tavecchio then came in after two first-half misses and redeemed himself to make the extra point and pick up the massive win.

Entering the year the Raiders had an MVP favorite in Derek Carr at quarterback. However, he’s had his share of struggles and missed a Week 5 game after suffering a bone break in his back. Instead it’s been the Chiefs quarterback — Alex Smith — who has been putting up the MVP-type numbers for the team that moved up for rookie Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 NFL Draft.
