There’s no doubt about it. If the New York Jets want to stay viable NFL playoff contenders in 2017.

Coming into the 2017 NFL season, most people thought the New York Jets were tanking and nowhere near playoff viability. However, things change, and the Jets currently sit one game out in the AFC East race and 10th in the AFC, a half-game out of a playoff spot.

The Jets face their long-time division rival, the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Despite it being somewhat early in the season, it’s a must-win game for Gang Green. Right now, they sit in last in what is the toughest division in football. They also have a 1-2 record within the division. A loss to Miami would have them fall under .500, 1-3 against the AFC East, and 3-4 against the AFC.

As per NFL.com the tie breakers are as follows for the division and the Wild Card:

Division

  1. Head to Head
  2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.

Wild Card

  1. Head-to-head, if applicable.
  2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
  3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.

It’s going to be tough to make up for losses early on this season. Only 55 percent of their remaining games are against either conference or division opponents, and unless they finish tied with an AFC East rival for a Wild Card spot, it’ll be unlikely to find many common opponents.

It may be “only Week 7,” but the Jets are in must-win territory already. For the Jets, this season wasn’t originally about wins and losses, but how the team showed improvement by the end of the season. Well, this would show improvement if they can show urgency in this game and come out victorious in a pressure packed game with a lot on the line.

This is a young team, and it would be a great boost to them if they can go to Miami and win.
