3. Being young finally caught up to them

The Dolphins defeating the Jets was as simple as a veteran team taking advantage of a young one. Even though the game ultimately came down to a veteran making a huge mistake (and that will definitely come up later), it was a matter of a first-year offensive coordinator easing up and the defense doing the same.

New York entered the fourth quarter with a 14-point lead. They left the game losing by three, and you can point to the strategy on offense. They had two drives in the fourth quarter with five passes on six plays. Those passes led to a net loss of 16 yards and two punts. The Dolphins followed up those drives with touchdowns. After the second touchdown, the Jets punted again.

The Jets also didn’t put the proverbial foot on the Dolphins’ throat on defense. When the Jets offense couldn’t get the ball moving, the Jets should’ve forced at worst two field goals, but they allowed the Dolphins to get back in it with big plays. Also, early rookie sensation Jamal Adams is starting to show his lack of experience making rookie mistakes more frequently. They will learn from their mistakes, because this game was a litmus test for them.
