After a heartbreaking loss to the Miami Dolphins, with their playoff hopes on the line, there is a shining light and his name is Jamal Adams.

The New York Jets drafted Jamal Adams with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Three major characteristics/abilities stood out. They were: leadership, ability to cover tight ends, and ability to play the pass or the run. All three have been on display at some point. On Sunday against Miami in a Week 7 loss, his ability to play the pass and run were on display early.

For the second-straight game against the Dolphins, Jay Ajayi was held under 2.5 yards per carry and kept out of the end zone. Adams was a key player in that with two tackles for loss on the day. He also added a sack on pass defense, which showed his ability to make a play based on instinct.

He also had a hand in (no pun intended) one of the Dolphins turnovers. He deflected a pass that ended up in the hands of Muhammad Wilkerson, which ended up setting up the Jets for a touchdown.

Adams also showed discipline that other teammates didn’t. There were 12 penalties for 124 yards on the Jets. None of them came from Adams. Say what you will about the game, but Adams was a bright spot.

Some fans saw the selection of Adams as yet another defensive pick in the first round by the Jets. So far in 2017, Adams is rewarding the Jets for their selection. He’s made some mistakes and had a bad game against the Browns, but he’s young and learning. Those things should be expected.

No matter what you about how the game ended, Adams continues to prove that the Jets made the correct decision when they drafted him. He’s going to be a spark and leads this defense for years to come.
