For fans of the New York Jets, landing one of the top quarterbacks in the 2018 NFL Draft would be a dream come true, but it may not end up being one.

The New York Jets and their fans have been seeking that franchise quarterback since Joe Willie Namath was exiled to the Rams in 1977. They’ve tried and so many times in the draft, that Jets fans can remember all of the failures. They’ve wanted desperately to get back to the Super Bowl that some would even endure a season of tanking to get there.

Trust the process, as they’ll tell you in Philadelphia.

Here’s the problem. There are four categories of quarterbacks. You have the quarterbacks like John Elway, Peyton Manning and Terry Bradshaw. These quarterbacks were No. 1 overall picks, and they lived up to the billing. That would be a dream for pro athletes.

Then you have the quarterbacks like David Carr, JaMarcus Russell, Tim Couch, Akili Smith and Ryan Leaf. All of those quarterbacks were selected at or near the top of the draft and are considered busts. No one wants that label.

The third quarterback is the hidden gem. A quarterback (maybe even an all-time great one) who can win you at least one Super Bowl, but one that is found late in the draft, like Tom Brady, Russell Wilson, Mark Rypien and Roger Staubach.

There’s another category, though, and it’s one that no Jets fan would want one of their quarterback in at this point. It’s currently a list occupied by Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, Tony Romo, Fran Tarkenton, Warren Moon and former Jets quarterback Vinny Testaverde. The list those men are on is the greatest of all-time without a Super Bowl title.

It doesn’t matter if it’s Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, or any of the other top quarterbacks. One of the top quarterbacks in the 2017 draft just may end up on that list. Given the fact that the Jets and their fans are hungry or a Super Bowl title, it won’t be a good thing for another Jets quarterback to end up on that list. So, be careful what you wish for.
