Round 3, Pick 16: Nick Chubb, RB – Georgia

Nick Chubb is one of the most exciting players in the country right now, but surprisingly he could still be on the board when the Packers are picking in the third round. In just 39 career games since 2014, Chubb has 41 total touchdowns and 4,454 yards from scrimmage. Chubb is averaging 6.4 yards per carry for his Georgia career, which also happens to be his average through the first seven games of this season.

Green Bay currently ranks 20th in rushing yards per game, averaging barely over 100 yards. Chubb could be a great addition to the team, despite the fact that Ty Montgomery was one of the best surprises for the Packers last season. The receiver-turned-runner is struggling this season on the ground, averaging just 3.1 yards per carry.

Montgomery would be best used as a change-of-pace back, with Chubb getting the lion’s share of work in the offense. The Packers are certainly a pass-first offense, but having a strong runner like Chubb could be a tremdous tool for Rodgers and the Packers to use. Chubb has also been improving as a pass blocker too.

Interestingly, Chubb may not be the highest ranked running back on the board at this point in the draft. Alabama running backs Damien Harris and Bo Scarborough could be similarly ranked to Chubb and also available at this pick. However, Alabama running backs have had a notoriously difficult time transitioning to the NFL, as the Packers well know. Green Bay drafted former Alabama running back Eddie Lacy in the 2013 NFL Draft, but Lacy never quite fit with the Packers team. Lacy is now with Seattle receiving limited playing time. I think Green Bay avoids the Alabama alumni and takes Chubb here.
