Special Teams

Granted, the playing conditions were terrible but Chandler Catanzaro’s two missed field goals (from 46 and 48 yards) were the difference in the game. He connected from 43 and 46 yards away but that is little solace to Jets fans. Conversely, Atlanta kicker Matt Bryant nailed all four of his field goal tries. There is your ball game.

The biggest special teams blunder came late in the game by the usually sure-handed Jeremy Kerley. The seven-year veteran muffed a punt by Atlanta’s Matt Bosher at his own 15 with 6:42 remaining. Kamal Ishmael pounced on the loose pigskin at the New York 13. Four plays later, Bryant booted a 29-yard field goal to forge the final score. Any chance the Jets had to possibly win the game with a field goal went out the window on that play. It really was shocking because Kerley is usually so steady and reliable.

Lac Edwards had a strong game with a 45.8 average on five punts, including three inside the 20.

Coaching

Once again Todd Bowles had his team well prepared. His teams play very hard for him but they still have to find a way to finish games. Close them out. Kerley’s miscue is a perfect example how the Jets always seem to make a crucial error in a big spot. They need to play smarter. At least they didn’t blow a 14-point fourth quarter lead this time around.
