The San Francisco 49ers now have their quarterback of the future after trading for Jimmy Garoppolo, which is a brilliant move for the franchise.

Normally the NFL Trade Deadline comes and goes with barely a real whimper. Oh, there’s plenty of chatter and rumor-tossing, but things of substance rarely take shape. In a 2017 season where things have been off the rails, though, the San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots made sure this trade deadline didn’t follow that pattern.

Jimmy Garoppolo is now headed to the Bay after the 49ers traded a 2018 second-round pick for him. This is obviously a blockbuster trade that lands San Francisco a viable quarterback for the future. What’s more, it’s big simply because he’s been in trade rumors for well over a year now.

For the Niners, however, this move is simply perfect. From top-to-bottom, it’s a brilliant move that sets this team up for success moving forward. Here are five reasons why the trade is such a wise one for San Fran.

5. Continuing to foster a positive culture

While some people warn against trading with the Patriots — usually a good rule of thumb — there are exceptions to that rule. Garoppolo is indeed among those exceptions. There was a fat chance that the Pats were going to pay the soon-to-be 26-year old quarterback what he’d demand on the open market. Thus, they were put into a position where they wanted to get return for him before he just left. Otherwise, this trade wouldn’t have ever transpired.

In bringing in Jimmy G, the 49ers are bringing in someone who has been brought up in a winning culture. Though Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch are trying to cultivate that type of environment, it’s been difficult this season with close losses. However, adding someone like the quarterback helps to further instill that mentality in the locker room.

For the rest of the 2017 season and then beyond (this is working under the assumption that they re-sign him), they now have a winning presence and a sense of hope under center that wasn’t there before.
