1. Freedom in 2018 NFL Draft

This is the biggest reason that this trade is so incredibly wise for the San Francisco 49ers. By trading for Garoppolo, this team essentially takes themselves out of the running to take one of the quarterbacks at the No. 1 or 2 pick in a draft rich at the position. While that means no Josh Rosen or Sam Darnold, it does mean that they get a player who is a tremendous talent and may be the best overall player in the draft, but just doesn’t play quarterback.

For a team as devoid of talent in many areas as the 49ers are, that’s so critical. Dealing a second-rounder to the Patriots isn’t all that detrimental to their draft capital as a whole. However, Jimmy G is better than any quarterback they’d be getting in the second round of the 2018 draft. What’s more, they could now add a player like Saquon Barkley to the mix. Would you rather have Josh Rosen and (maybe?) Carlos Hyde or Garoppolo and Barkley? My vote goes to the latter, especially long-term.

Much like is the case with this team in 2018 free agency now, there’s now so much more room to move for this 49ers team in the draft. Not being bound by needing a quarterback is so exceptionally freeing when it comes to the draft. That’s now the position that Lynch will find himself in during his second draft with the organization.
