Chicago Bears: 7 Possible replacements for John Fox
5. Scott Linehan, Dallas Cowboys, Offensive Coordinator
Scott Linehan did a good job at rehabilitating his reputation. He spent three seasons as head coach of the St. Louis Rams, but that was just a train wreck. He compiled a record of 11-25 and didn’t have the respect of his players.
Since then, however, he earned a reputation as a good offensive mind. He did an excellent job helping Matthew Stafford develop during his early years. When Tony Romo went down in 2016, he helped develop rookie quarterback Dak Prescott. In that season, he threw 23 touchdown passes against just 4 interceptions. That’s a touchdown to interception rate of almost 6:1, an incredible number. Also, he had a 104.9 passer rating. Prescott became the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Early on, Linehan took some plays that Prescott ran at Mississippi State and put them into the Cowboys’ playbook. That got Prescott comfortable early. He then added more as the season progressed. By the end of the season, Prescott did a great job at reading defenses and making the right plays.
This is exactly what Trubisky needs. This is what the Texans did with Deshaun Watson. Instead, Fox has Trubisky hand off the ball to the running backs 25-30 times and has him throw only when absolutely necessary.
Linehan showed that he deserves another shot as a head coach. He has much more experience and his track record is good since his days as the Rams head coach. Considering what he did with Stafford and Prescott early in their careers, he’d be a perfect fit for young Mitch Trubisky.
