Brock Osweiler will be the Denver Broncos starting quarterback against the Eagles this week. Here’s a rundown on how this could possibly change the offense.

The Denver Broncos needed to make a change after dropping three straight games in horrific fashion. Trevor Siemian’s poor play stunted the offense’s ability to move the chains on a consistent basis, and the team needed to make a change.

Broncos head coach Vance Joseph announced on Wednesday that Brock Osweiler will be the team’s starting quarterback on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. This announcement wasn’t a shock considering Siemian’s terrible play at quarterback in the last couple of weeks and this could be the shot in the arm that the offense needs.

Osweiler spent his first four seasons with the Broncos before signing a massive four year $72 million contract with the Houston Texans. There he completed a dismal 59 percent of his passes for 2957 yards, 15 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. After the 2016 season, the Texans traded his rights to the Cleveland Browns to get out from under his massive contract. He then was cut by the Browns later in the year and was picked back up by the Broncos.

With Osweiler at quarterback, the offense can’t get much worse. Siemian has thrown six interceptions in his last three games and the passing game has virtually been nonexistent for the Broncos. Even if he falls on his face this Sunday, nothing will change from the previous three weeks. It’s a no lose situation for the Broncos.

The offensive line has been the team’s biggest bug-a-boo this year as they have been very inconsistent at protecting the passer, allowing an embarrassing 12 sacks in the last three games. Osweiler’s biggest challenge will be maneuvering through the pocket with limited pass protection. He will be playing in the toughest of circumstances for a quarterback who is coming off the bench.

There’s some upside with Osweiler. There’s a chance he can build a rapport with star wide receiver Demaryius Thomas which could help ignite the team’s passing offense. With Siemian at quarterback, Thomas was used on a limited basis which wasn’t optimal for the offense’s ability to move the football. Osweiler will do a better job at completing deeper passes which will help keep opposing defenses honest. His consistency and his ability to read defenses might be his downfall in the near future.

I think this is the right choice for the team. They needed to make a change in the worst way. Osweiler will never be Joe Montana, and he might not even improve the team, but sometimes you just have to shake things up to see if you can improve your odds at winning.
