The New York Jets seem to be on the same path as they were with Ryan Fitzpatrick 2015, but it doesn’t have to be that way with Josh McCown.

In 2015, Ryan Fitzpatrick had the best season of his career. Then, he did the unthinkable. He held the New York Jets hostage for a huge ransom. He got a huge deal that hamstrung the Jets for two seasons. Now there are rumblings among fans and he media. People are beginning to wonder if the Jets will make the same mistake they did with McCown that they did Fitzpatrick.

There are two questions that need to be asked here:

  1. Will the Jets even consider re-signing McCown?
  2. If they do, is it a mistake?

The answer to the first question remains to be seen. The answer to the second question is both yes and no. It’s not necessarily a mistake, but it can be.

After a recent interview with reporters, ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported the following about general manager Mike Maccagnan:

"McCown has “fulfilled all our expectations,” said Maccagnan, who wouldn’t say if he’d like to re-sign their current starter. He said it’s too soon to make that call."

When it comes to dealing with the impending offseason, Maccagnan will have to sit with his coaches and scouts and discuss this. It doesn’t have to be like the Fitzpatrick mess, though. There are three potential options on the table for them to deal with re-signing McCown.
