Green Bay Packers: Ty Montgomery re-establishing his value
By Hunter Noll
Ty Montgomery re-established his value for the Green Bay Packers after an injury led to him to losing playing time to other running back options.
Ty Montgomery entered the season as the Green Bay Packers clear-cut No. 1 running back. There were some obvious problems through the first few weeks of the season though. While Montgomery had a great receiving game in Week 2, his Week 1 performance was only good, while his Week 3 was poor.
Meanwhile, he had very limit impact on the ground. Of course, this wasn’t expected to be the biggest part of his game anyways. With that being said, breaking off some great runs were expected. That hadn’t happened yet.
In Week 4, Montgomery might have had something going. He already had 28 yards on five carries (no catches though), early on. Montgomery left in the first quarter with a chest injury though, and wouldn’t return. In fact, Montgomery missed the next week as well.
The 24-year old returned for Week 6, but didn’t have an impact. He ran 10 times for 28 yards, and caught one pass for three more. Since then, the workload for Montgomery has been steadily declining. He was given five touches in Green Bay’s next game, and six the game after that.

Not only was he not getting touches, Montgomery wasn’t doing anything with them. It’s easy to justify cutting someone’s workload down considerably when they aren’t performing.
Then came Week 10, with the Packers desperate for a win against the Chicago Bears. They came into the game 4-4, having lost three-straight. Of course, the biggest lost was the Aaron Rodgers injury. Due to it, the Packers have been sliding (and seeing their playoff chances slide with them).
Montgomery reminded everyone just what he can do on Sunday. The Stanford product caught two passes for 14 yards, while picking up 54 yards on the ground using just six carries. That includes a 37-yard touchdown run. The Packers won the game, and got back over .500 (5-4) on the year. Clearly, the strong showing could warrant Montgomery getting more touches. Now the injuries need to stop getting in his way.

That entire stat line also came in the first half. He sat out the second half with a rib injury. It’s still unclear if he’ll be able to play this week due to that. The Packers were reminded just how valuable a healthy Ty Montgomery can be though. Look for him to get more touches in the future.
