1. Reaching for a quarterback early in the draft

Many say this is one of the best quarterback classes ever. That doesn’t mean the Jets should neglect other issues on this team, just to get a perceived franchise quarterback. That’s not the right way to build an NFL franchise — period.

Jets fans are clamoring for a franchise quarterback. For argument’s sake, let’s look at the 12 quarterbacks who’ve won multiple Super Bowls, and use them as the barometer of the label “franchise quarterback.” Eight of them were first round picks. When you dig deeper though, and list those eight in order of most Super Bowls won, it takes six of them to surpass the accomplishments of the other four, and the other four were selected 75th or later.

The Jets don’t need to take a quarterback in the first round to be successful in their quest for Super Bowl championships. What they need to do is build their team correctly and not sacrifice other deficiencies to take a perceived franchise quarterback.

If the Jets can fix most of their issues in free agency, then go ahead and take the quarterback. Otherwise, the quarterback shouldn’t be the main target in the first round.
