Green Bay Packers: Time to seriously consider Colin Kaepernick
By Hunter Noll
The Green Bay Packers are still in the playoff race. With an Aaron Rodgers return possible, they just need to stay afloat. Colin Kaepernick can help.
Before you get all emotional, take out any personal feelings you have. Look at this simply from a football standpoint. When the Green Bay Packers lost Aaron Rodgers to a collarbone injury, it was clear the season wasn’t going to go as planned. Nevertheless, the hope was that Brett Hundley could keep them afloat.
Instead, they’ve dropped from a 4-1 record and first in the NFC North, to 5-5 and currently out of the playoffs. While he isn’t getting much help from his teammates, Hundley’s not doing himself any favors either. The quarterback has two touchdown passes compared to seven interceptions.
The Packers don’t have many other options on the roster though, as Joe Callahan is the backup. Callahan is a second-year quarterback who is seen as a project. It would be irresponsible to throw him into this type of situation already.
That leaves outside hires. The biggest name out there is obviously Colin Kaepernick. Regardless of how you feel about the entire situation surrounding him, it’s hard to argue with stats.
Last season, Kaepernick appeared in 12 games. In that time, he threw 16 touchdowns compared to just four interceptions. He also average 6.8 yards per carry, scoring two more times on the ground. Meanwhile, the 30-year old has a 28-30 record as a starter. That’s pretty solid considering he’s 3-16 over the last two years on a San Francisco 49ers team that had absolutely nothing going for it.
Although his record over the last few seasons has been less-than-stellar, Kaepernick knows how to win. He’s a veteran presence at the position, and won’t lose them many games with turnovers. Something the Packers need right now, as Hundley has two three-interception games in five starts this year.
As a player, there aren’t many solid arguments against Kaepernick. The “bad for the locker room” comments should be shut down with his “Len Eshmont” award win last season. The award is given to the person who, like Len Eshmont, exemplifies inspirational and courageous play. That award is voted on by the players on the 49ers. Translation: the locker room had no problem with him.

The biggest argument against signing Kaepernick may be that bringing a quarterback in this late in the season might not work out. Desperate times call for desperate measures though, and things are getting desperate in Green Bay. Colin Kaepernick isn’t perfect on the field. The Packers don’t need perfect though. They need someone who can hold the team together until Aaron Rodgers gets healthy.
If you can think of any better options than Kaepernick feel free to tell me, right now I can’t though. I mean, unless Brett Favre picks up the phone.
