The Green Bay Packers thought they solved their tight end situation with Martellus Bennett. Clearly that didn’t work out, so it’s back to the drawing board.
When the Green Bay Packers signed Martellus Bennett this offseason, the feeling was that their tight end problem was solved. While they didn’t have the worst group of tight ends in football, it wasn’t hard to find better. The three-year deal with Bennett was a long-term solution. That lasted for half of a season though.
The Bennett-Packers marriage ended pretty roughly. Green Bay believes he failed to disclose an injury, while Bennett feels the Packers doctors weren’t doing their jobs very well. No matter who was right, it was clear they’d both be happy to be parting ways.
Although cutting ties with Bennett was probably the right move for the Packers, it leaves them back at square one. Their offense is still void of a truly dangerous tight end.
Richard Rodgers is somewhat of a vertical threat, while Lance Kendrick is more of a safety net player. Neither of them is a clear solution to the Packers tight end problem though. In fact, both of them are currently contributing to the notion that Green Bay could use some fresh blood at the position.
Due to this, it’s clear what should be right near the top of the Packers wish list. Whether it’s via draft or free agency, or even trade, Green Bay needs to go after a tight end.

If Aaron Rodgers was still healthy, smart money would be on the Packers making a move before the trade deadline. With their playoff hopes dwindling, that seems less likely now though. The Green Bay Packers have been in search for their franchise tight end for a long time. It’s about time they give Aaron Rodgers the safety net he deserves.
