New York Jets: Report Card vs. Panthers in Week 12
Defense
The Jets did a very effective job against Cam Newton. The former NFL MVP completed just 11 of 28 passes for 168 yards and no touchdowns. Newton did rush for a short touchdown, but gained a scant 28 yards on the ground on nine carries. Demario Davis, Darron Lee and Steve McClendon collected sacks and Davis had a team-high 10 tackles. He has been terrific this season.
The lone Panther to really hurt New York was wide receiver Devin Funchess with seven receptions for 108 yards. The Jets kept him out of the end zone though. Gang Green did allow 145 yards on the ground, too many to claim victory.
Mike Pennel made the bonehead penalty of the game though and it cost New York any chance to pull out a dramatic win. Trailing 32-27 and needing the ball back, the Jets’ Pennel was flagged for a roughing the passer penalty with 2:17 remaining in the contest. Newton had just thrown an incomplete pass on third and 11 at the Jets 48 so instead of New York getting the football, the Panthers drove down to the 27-yard line where Graham Gano’s 45-yard field goal iced the game. Another dumb penalty. One of so many this season.
