1. It’s 1998 all over again

Prince once had a No. 1 hit entitled “Party like it’s 1999.” Well, the Jets need to go into this offseason like it’s 1998. If the Jets have given up on Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg, they should unequivocally not focus their efforts on drafting a quarterback, but on free agency.

30 years ago, the Jets made big signings in the offseason, and they were one step away from being in the Super Bowl. Their three biggest signing in the 1998 offseason were Kevin Mawae and two key offensive skill position players that would help them to the AFC Championship Game, Curtis Martin and Vinny Testaverde.

The Jets need to treat the 2018 offseason like they did the 1998 offseason. They need to go all in on trying to land Kirk Cousins and Le’Veon Bell, if the Redskins and Steelers, respectively, allow them to hit the free agent market. It’s not signing one of them. It must be both.

The Jets can’t live with a quarterback making rookie mistakes and set the team backward. They need to keep moving forward, and the draft isn’t the way to go. They will more than likely take a step back with a rookie quarterback, and then, they have to hope he can take a giant leap forward. That’s not what this team needs.
