New York Jets: 3 Keys to victory vs. Chiefs in Week 13
2. Make sure Tyreek Hill doesn’t beat you
That is easier said then done. The West Alabama product is one of the most dynamic players in the league. He probably is the fastest player in the NFL. Every defensive coordinator has sleepless nights trying to prepare a game plan to stop him. The Jets are no different.
As dangerous as Hill is as a receiver — he has 54 receptions for 726 yards and four touchdowns — he may be even more potent as a punt returner. The 5-foot-10, 185-pounder was a First-Team NFL All-Pro performer in that role in 2016, averaging 15.2 yards per return, including a pair of touchdowns.
Although he is averaging just 8.5 yards per return this season, Hill sprinted for an electrifying 82-yard return for a touchdown in Week Five. The Jets know all too well how a punt return can be a back-breaker in a game. Just last week Carolina’s Kaelin Clay galloped 60 yards for a score on a punt return that gave the Panthers a 32-20 lead over New York in the fourth quarter. That was the final nail in the coffin for Gang Green in their very frustrating 35-27 loss to the Cats.
It is vital that the Jets keep lane containment when they boot the ball away to Hill. Better yet, they should not punt the ball anywhere near him, if possible. Punt the ball out-of-bounds if you have to. Hill is the modern-day Devin Hester. He’s that dangerous. The Jets know it. Now they have to make sure he doesn’t break their backs again.
