The New York Giants have fired head coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese, but Sean Payton should be the top candidate to step in.

Update: A previous version of this post incorrectly stated that Sean Payton’s contract would be up in 2017. This has been changed.

In today’s NFL the head coach should be in charge of player personnel decisions. We’ve already seen it be successful in New England and Seattle. The thing about those two coaches is that they were unsuccessful in their first stints in the NFL as head coaches when working under a general manager, and once they were given player personnel control, they rose to the top of the coaching ranks.

The New York Giants would prefer to keep to their history of hiring a general manager, and then hiring a head coach. In fact, Giants owner John Mara told WFAN’s Mike Francessa that, and it was reported by the New York Daily News that the Giants would prefer to hire a general manager and have him involved in the coaching search.

"Mara said the GM search starts right away and that he has asked ex-Giants GM Ernie Accorsi to serve as a consultant in search process, said ideally he would like to have that in place first before a head coach. That’s the ideal scenario."

Even though that is the case, former Giants offensive coordinator Sean Payton would fit the bill of exactly what they need. The Giants should bring Payton back into the fold. He should have full authority over personnel decisions and pick the Giants quarterback of the future.

He’s been tied to the hip with Drew Brees, and Brees may leave New Orleans after 2017. If so, and Payton wants a fresh start, it should be in New York.

It may not be the “Giants way,” but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be. It’s said that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Well, for the Giants, one of the NFL’s original founding members, it’s time for a new trick. Mara said it’s not out of the question. Well, it should be their only answer. It’s time for a coach in New York who has complete control of the team. Why not Sean Payton?
