2018 NFL Draft: Chicago Bears 7-round mock draft in early December
With the Chicago Bears officially eliminated from the playoff race, it’s now time to look at the offseason. Here is my first mock from the 2018 NFL Draft.
Well, for those who harbored hope of the Chicago Bears making the playoffs this season, your bubble burst. With the loss to the San Francisco 49ers last week, the Bears are now officially eliminated from that.
Now that the Bears are playing only for draft position, it’s now time to look into the offseason. The new coaching staff (yes, a new staff) has some work to do to rid the losing mentality around the franchise. Also, general manager Ryan Pace needs to make some big decisions concerning that new staff and bringing in new players.
First up is free agency. There are a number of big names available to help fill the many holes on this team. Second, is the 2018 NFL Draft. Free agency cannot be the main way to win again. That is just too expensive to do. The draft is critical. He can pick up some key players and have them for a good deal of time before those players look for big money.
As I mentioned, there are a lot of holes on this team. Offensively, the Bears just cannot move the ball and score. The playbook is pedestrian. Yes, hiring an offensive-minded coach helps, but he (as well as quarterback Mitchell Trubisky) needs the players to run his offense. The wide receivers corps is in tatters and the offensive line struggled throughout the season.
The defense certainly took a step forward this season, but injuries took a toll lately. They probably need another edge rusher if Pace decides to part ways with Pernell McPhee. Additionally, the defensive line needs more depth and the secondary needs some shoring up. On the bright spot, the team doesn’t have a glaring need at safety for the first time since the Ice Age.
Remember, a mock is just a snapshot of what the team could do. What is obvious today may not be a month or even a week from now.
