The Jacksonville Jaguars are having a good season with Blake Bortles guiding the offense. Would Jacksonville use a first round pick on Baker Mayfield as the future?

The Jacksonville Jaguars are playing well enough to garner a playoff spot. Even the play of Blake Bortles has improved from last season. Because of the nature of the position, is there a different quarterback that could take the Jaguars to a higher level?

Since Jacksonville drafted Bortles in 2014, he has been inconsistent as the Jaguars starting quarterback. Many described his play in 2016 as a regression of his skills. Whether he played hurt last season or not, he spent the past summer trying to get back his form.

Interceptions have haunted Bortles throughout his career. In fact, pick sixes have defined him historically. Doug Marrone actually reported that he preferred to run every down and not throw a pass.

Has Bortles hit his ceiling this season? Should Jacksonville look at improving the quarterback position? Would the Jaguars take a quarterback in the first round and which one?

Due to this successful season, Jacksonville will be drafting at a lower position than in recent years. The current favorites should be off the board by the time Jacksonville is on the clock. Would Jacksonville use their first round selection to grab Baker Mayfield?

First, Mayfield plays passionately. After defeating Ohio State, Mayfield planted the Oklahoma University flag at midfield. Afterwards, Mayfield apologized to Ohio State for his actions, and again to Kansas. It’s safe to say that Marrone and Tom Coughlin would make sure he keeps his emotions in check. Imagine a quarterback that plays with the passion of Jalen Ramsey.

Next, he has the insane ability to extend plays for touchdowns. Mayfield has only thrown five interceptions in 369 attempts this season. When flushed from the pocket, he accurately finds a target. He is often compared to Russell Wilson of Seattle.

As an Oklahoma University (OU) graduate, drafting Mayfield would be an awesome and welcome addition to the Jaguars. Reuniting him with Dede Westbrook would ignite the passing attack. Marcedes Lewis would benefit with Mayfield giving him ample targets.

Drafting Mayfield should be a top consideration for this young and hungry Jaguars team. For a former walk-on, Mayfield was named Big 12 Freshman of the year at Texas Tech. He worked his way to becoming the OU starter after transferring. Seems like he is a Coughlin type of player.
