2018 NFL Draft: New York Jets 7-round mock draft in mid-December
The last time the Jets drafted a center from Ohio State, he ended up being as durable as they come. Nick Mangold missed only four games in his first 10 seasons, then injuries caught up to him. The transition for the Jets at center wasn’t as smooth as it was from Kevin Mawae to Mangold, but they finally have their guy if they take Billy Price.
Price doesn’t have the same athleticism or power that Mangold had, but what he lacks in power and measurables he makes up for in awareness and intelligence. He’s solid in pass and run blocking, and Price is athletic enough to play in the NFL. With many more teams playing 3-4 defense to combat the 11 personnel look of base offenses, his ability to handle nose tackles is very important.
Playing center in the NFL is much more than brute strength and measurables, and what some may see as deficiencies, Price can make up for in other ways. The Jets need to bolster this line, and they will do so with the addition of Price. He has the potential to be a long-term answer at center for the Jets, and will be with the team for many years to come.
