2018 NFL Draft: New York Jets 7-round mock draft in mid-December
Adonis Alexander is out of the Richard Sherman mold. He is a big corner with some functional speed, and he best operates in a press-man type scheme, which the Jets want to run. He can play zone and off man coverage. That said, he struggles with tackling and covering slants in off man coverage, something that Virginia Tech fans can attest to frustratingly.
Alexander has forced turnovers and been decent against the run at Virginia Tech. He has 4.5 tackles for loss and seven interceptions. According to Pro Football Focus Elite, he’s allowed a passer rating of 64.1 and has allowed a reception once every 15.1 coverage snaps on average.
Put simply, Alexander would be a great fit for the Jets defense that wants to be aggressive and needs corners who can bump-and-run. He might not get the turnover numbers that he’s produced for the Hokies throughout his college career, but he can shut down his man, and that’s what the Jets need. Adding him would help strengthen an area of the defensive unit that needs a boost moving forward.
