2018 NFL Draft: New York Jets 7-round mock draft in mid-December
Many knowledgeable and older football fans will recognize the last name of this Boise State Broncos quarterback. That’s because Rypien is the nephew of former Redskins quarterback and Super Bowl XXVI Most Valuable Player Mark Rypien.
The Jets don’t see Rypien as a long-term answer or future starter, but a viable backup in this league. However, like his uncle, he will grow under the tutelage of Kirk Cousins (again, a prediction), and he will surpass expectations and become a starter (maybe even for the Jets). Rypien is small for NFL standards at 6-2, 200 pounds. However, he is mobile and accurate.
According to Pro Football Focus Elite, he is among the nation’s leaders in adjusted completion percentage (which accounts for drops, throwaways, balls batted at the line of scrimmage, spikes and a quarterback getting hit while he’s throwing). He also has a decent passer rating and adjusted completion percentage on pressure plays, and a great passer rating on balls 20+ yards in the air.

Rypien will battle Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty for a roster spot in camp, and he may win it. He is a competent NFL backup, and may become a viable NFL starter after some grooming. He has potential, but will take time to grow, just like his uncle.
