New York Jets: 3 Things team needs to see from Bryce Petty
The New York Jets inserted Bryce Petty as their starter, and he can earn a shot at becoming the starter in 2018 with how he finishes the 2017 season.
Todd Bowles said repeatedly that Josh McCown would be the starting quarterback for the New York Jets going forward. Then he broke his hand on Sunday, and their plans had to change.
The next man up for the Jets is Bryce Petty. They drafted Petty in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Truthfully, he hasn’t had enough of a sample size in games to determine his true NFL capabilities. It’s also going to be a tough hill to climb considering it’s his first year in the West Coast Offense. According to the final evaluation of his NFL Draft Profile on NFL.com:
"He needs a year or two of practice time and camp work to learn how to get through his progressions, but has the intelligence to do that."
Petty can make most, if not all, the same throws McCown did, because he has the arm strength to do so. It’s just a matter of fitting the throws through the small windows NFL defenses provide and going through the progressions.
These next three weeks will be it for Petty. Whether it’s fair or not, given the circumstances, it’s make it or break it for him as an NFL starter. Here are the things he will need to do to prove he belongs.
