2. Don’t force the ball into coverage

Bryce Petty must keep his turnovers down. At Baylor, he threw the ball 845 times and only had 10 interceptions. He’s thrown the ball 142 times in his NFL career and already has seven. More interceptions should be expected though, because the system at Baylor was designed for one-read, and the guys were open a lot.

One thing Petty should take from Josh McCown is the moniker of “Captain Checkdown”. He’ll have to settle for dumping it off, and even go to his hot read. With this line, though, there will be a lot of times he will just have to throw the ball away.

The Saints, Chargers and Patriots have combined for 41 interceptions. So, Petty better be on alert. Take a sack once in a while, throw the ball away, or check it down. Don’t be a hero and go for the gusto every time.

Don’t put the Jets receivers in a position where they’ll get hurt either. Petty doesn’t need to be the hero. He just needs to play smart and fundamental football. He will likely go 0-3 in this stretch, but that’s okay. It’s not about wins and losses; it’s about playing the right way and showing you belong.
