Not long ago, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was seen as the glue holding this outstanding New York secondary together. Now, as we inch closer to the end of the 2017 campaign, it’s looking like he might not even have a place on this roster next year.

It all started back in October, when he was suspended for a game after walking out on the team. Although he’s come back and been a significant piece of the New York defense since, it would come as no surprise if he was shown the door this offseason.

That is, assuming Eli Apple’s situation is smoothed out. The Giants have the No. 1 job locked down with Janoris Jenkins, but there’s some concern about Apple’s future. He’s had some behind-the-scenes issues that have limited his availability, and the belief is he’s disliked within the locker room. Still, even if the staff that drafted him is gone, Apple offers too much upside to bid him farewell.

The only reason this may not happen is the financials. Rodgers-Cromartie is due $8.5 million next season, but letting him go would create $2 million in dead cap space. Considering the Giants aren’t expected to have a ton of spending power in 2018, creating more cap restrictions wouldn’t be ideal. Maybe a trade could help get DRC out of New York.

Even with the old regime gone, it may just be time for a fresh start for the aging cornerback.
