4. Transitioning to the West Coast Offense

Petty came from a one-read system at Baylor. It’s a system designed to get the ball out of the quarterback’s hands to a specific target or take off and run. It can be one that hides flaws in a quarterback’s game and highlights the good attributes.

Then, when he came to the NFL, he was drafted by the Jets under Chan Gailey. Now, he has to learn a totally new offense, while he’s still transitioning out of Baylor. Since it was his first game under this offense let’s cut him some slack.

Yes, he made a lot of mistakes, but that doesn’t mean they’re not correctable. According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, here’s what Todd Bowles said after the game about the team.

"“Obviously, this is going to turn,” he said. “I believe that we have a good core group.” He added, “I don’t worry about how many we lost in a row. I know how we lost and I know why we lost. We’re fighting. As long as we’ve got fight and we correct the small things, we’ll be fine.”"

The same applies to Bryce Petty’s game individually. Just give him time in the West Coast offense. He hasn’t even had a full season learning the nuances yet.
