2. It’s one game

Let’s say you work in a business for four years. Then, after your fourth year, you move on to a different company in the same field. That company runs things completely differently than your previous company. Then, that company changes your department head, and he runs things completely differently than your previous department head. Then you make a couple of minor mistakes, and people want you to be fired. That’s basically what Petty is going through right now.

See the picture on the top of this page? That’s how they called plays at Baylor. There was not a huddle, and a coach was signaling protections, like the coach in blue. Then Petty came to the pros with Chan Gailey as his offensive coordinator. Gailey was then fired and replaced by John Morton. Petty is in a new offense while still learning the nuances of professional football, and it’s his first real action in the system.

No matter how the game ended up turning out, and it wasn’t pretty, there’s no need to overreact to this game. Let’s see where he goes against the Chargers in Week 16 and then against the Patriots in Week 17. This isn’t a one-game tryout. Let’s judge Petty on the three games as a whole, not just the one was saw on Sunday.
