If the New York Giants are in position to draft Notre Dame offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey in the 2018 NFL Draft, that would be more than ideal.

Erick Flowers is steadily improving. That said, it would behoove the New York Giants to consider a move to right tackle for Flowers and drafting a left tackle in the 2018 NFL Draft. Mike McGlinchey would fit exactly what they need.

It would also mean the offseason played out perfectly. It would mean that:

1. Eli Manning waived his no-trade clause and
2. They signed a free agent quarterback to replace him.

Left tackle is the most important non-quarterback position on the field, and may even be more important than the quarterback in the pass-driven NFL today. The left tackle is the most important protector, because he protects the blind side.

The Giants running game and passing game suffered as a result of a bad offensive line. Adding McGlinchey would be the start of rebuilding the line.

Grade: Top 10 pick

McGlinchey has what you need in an offensive tackle. In pass protection, he’s balanced, strong, and is very good with his footwork. As a run blocker, he has the power to move edge rushers, and doesn’t allow them to break away.

One thing should stand out in the scouting report that’s not on the field, but rather off of it. He is very disciplined. He had an opportunity to leave school early last year, he would’ve been the first offensive tackle off the board, but according to Laken Litman of the Indianapolis Star that wasn’t his concern:

"When he first came to college, he set out on a five-year plan and is on track to complete that process.“I have 19 games left here and that’s what I fully intend to take on,” McGlichey said. “I have a lot left to learn. I’m not ready to go anywhere.”"

That should tell NFL teams he’s willing to put the work in and also not forgo anything for the sake of the process. McGlinchey will be the first offensive tackle off the board in 2018.
