There’s an old cliché that you can’t have your cake and eat it too, and the New York Jets are in a situation where they can.

Fans are calling for the end of Bryce Petty. They want the New York Jets to draft a quarterback in the 2018 NFL Draft early and maybe bring in a veteran mentor. Some have even told me that there’s not enough time to give Petty an entire season. And if they were to do that and he fails, they will potentially miss out on a future quarterback.

Limiting the Jets to signing a free agent like Teddy Bridgewater or Kirk Cousins, or signing a veteran backup and using him as a mentor to the recently drafted guy doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t have to be that black and white, though. There’s another scenario that no one has even considered.

Draft a young quarterback in the middle rounds, and make him the fourth-string quarterback in camp. Sign a veteran for two years with the intent of having him be the backup. Have Petty go into camp as the starter, sign a veteran backup, and still draft a quarterback in the middle part of the draft.

The best part of this scenario is that we could have a Russell Wilson situation without the huge contract to Matt Flynn. There could be a scenario where the coaches see something in the draft pick, and he could even win the job in camp over Petty.

It’s not as cut and dry as you think. There can be a plan in place that revolves around Petty being the future and not losing out on a guy who can be the quarterback of the future if he fails. The Jets can allow Bryce Petty to fail and have his immediate successor waiting in the wings.
