Detroit Lions vs. Cincinnati Bengals

A season ago, the Detroit Lions owned a 9-4 record with three weeks to play. They lost the rest of their games but still finished with enough wins to qualify for the playoffs.

This season, Jim Caldwell’s club owns an 8-6 record after 15 weeks and finishes the season against these Cincinnati Bengals and then at home against the Green Bay Packers. Could the Lions actually finish with 10 wins and miss the playoffs?

First things first is this date in the Queen City.

Keys to Victory

The Lions defense doesn’t wow you with gaudy numbers. The team ranks 27th in the NFL in total defense and only four clubs in the league have allowed more passing yards per contest. Coordinator Teryl Austin has seen his unit become very opportunistic. A season ago, there were just 14 takeaways in 16 outings.

This season, the Lions have forced an impressive 27 turnovers with two weeks to play. And they take on a Cincinnati offense that not only ranks at the very bottom of the league in total offense and rushing yards per game but Marvin Lewis’ club has committed 21 turnovers during its disappointing 5-9 showing to date.

Prediction

The Detroit Lions have managed to keep their helmets above water and with two weeks to go are still in the playoff hunt. Unfortunately for Caldwell’s club, earlier losses this season to the Saints, Falcons and Panthers could wind up costing this team even if they close the year with two more victories.

The Cincinnati Bengals are in the final two installments of the Marvin Lewis Era and wideout A.J. Green will make his presence felt but it won’t be enough.
