The 2018 NFL Draft is big for the New York Giants, because they can right the ship a bit from 2017.

The New York Giants are going to finish with their 11th season with three wins or fewer in the 93-year history of the team. The NFC East, though, is always changing, and the 2018 NFL Draft can help the Giants get right back into the thick of things in their division.

The Giants need to fix their problems on the offensive line, which probably include moving Erick Flowers to right tackle. They need to upgrade their running attack, and find a quarterback of the future. Eli Manning’s contract makes him difficult to move, unless he retires or waives his no trade clause. So, he will likely stay and ride out the remaining year on his contract.

That means the Giants don’t have to get one of the big five quarterbacks. They can build the team and get a quarterback they can develop. The next two drafts will tell the story of whether or not it will be a three-team race for the NFC East going forward or just a battle between the Eagles and Cowboys, but it begins with 2018.

In 1997, Tony Banks wasn’t exactly lighting up the NFL, and the then St. Louis Rams probably needed a quarterback. By 1999, Banks was gone from the organization. In the 1997 NFL Draft the Rams did something draft that set them up to win the Super Bowl. They drafted a franchise left tackle, who would eventually be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, by the name of Orlando Pace at No. 1 overall.

Fast forward to 2018, the Giants are in a situation where they could decide to ride out the final year of Eli Manning’s contract, which will be difficult to get out of it he doesn’t retire. The Giants will set themselves up for the next decade by getting the best left tackle in the draft.

McGlinchey is balanced in his footwork and blocks well against pass rushers on the edge and in the running game. Alongside Quenton Nelson, McGlinchey led one of the nation’s best running games. McGlinchey would’ve been the top tackle in last year’s draft, but he was committed to the five-year plan he made before going into college. That should please scouts that he made a plan and stuck to it. The discipline and hard work propelled him to the top of the 2018 NFL Draft.
