Locking up Davante Adams was a necessity for the Green Bay Packers, but it may come at a cost.

The Green Bay Packers locked up one of Aaron Rodgers’ favorite targets for the foreseeable future.  On Friday, the team signed wide receiver Davante Adams to a four-year contract extension worth $58 million per multiple media reports. This contract is lucrative right from the get-go. Adams will receive $18 million to sign and $32 million in the first two years of the contract per NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.

Adams was slated to become a free agent following the 2018 season.

In what was a difficult year by Green Bay standards, Adams had a productive season. Catching 74 receptions for 885 yards and 10 touchdowns, he led the team in receiving. Those numbers were actually down from 2016. That year, he caught 75 passes for 997 yards and 12 touchdowns.

This was a huge and necessary signing on the part of the Packers. Adams has been one of the team’s most productive receivers ever since he entered the National Football League and has flown under the radar slightly because of the Packers’ depth at the receiver position.

Aaron Rodgers may need a great amount of help in the 2018 campaign. We do not know how well he is going to come back from injury. He may need all the help he can get not only this year but also down the road. Signing Adams to a long-term deal will provide that and give Rodgers another weapon to throw to.

Green Bay’s depth and talent at the position is a huge reason why this extension puts the team in a difficult situation. This is a huge payday for Adams and he deserves it. He is a player who is able to produce game in and game out. However, the Packers also have to resign Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson. Both of them are set to hit the free agent market following the 2018 season and both earn around $10 million per year right now. Now the question is, can the Packers keep both wideouts?

The above question is one that will be answered another day. For now, the Packers locked up one of the league’s most underrated receivers for quite a while. That should be music to the ears of Packer fans everywhere.
