Pernell McPhee, LB (Savings = $7.075 million)

The Chicago Bears defense was very good when Pernell McPhee was on the field. His leadership and his ability to wreak havoc helped stop opposing offenses. The problem with McPhee is getting him on the field on a consistent basis. In his three seasons in Chicago, he missed 12 games. Also, there were a few others in which he left early out of games.

McPhee is yet another player with a buyout on his contract. If the Bears keep him, they are on the hook for $16.575 million for the next two seasons. He’s entering his age 30 next season. What are the odds he stays healthy?

With that in mind, I think McPhee’s time in Chicago is as over as Fox’s. You cannot pay $16 million+ for a guy who may spend too much time in the trainer’s room. The Bears need a pass rusher who’s there consistently. The same can be said of Leonard Floyd, but he’s only been in the league for two seasons. His body is still getting in professional shape. McPhee is another one breaking down.

This is a team transitioning into a pretty young one. There are some good, young pass rushers in the draft who can make an impact, thus forcing McPhee out.
