New York Jets: 2018 Offseason predictions through the draft
No doubt about it, Hunter Renfrow is small for the NFL. At 5-11, 180 pounds he’s smaller that Julian Edelman, but Renfrow has carved himself a niche in college football that translates well into the NFL of 2018.
Renfrow was primarily used as a slot receiver at Clemson. So, there’s regular tape of what he can do there. In fact, according to Pro Football Focus Elite, he played slot receiver 94.1% of his snaps. He was tied for eighth in catch rate, and he was the only player with a slot usage rate as high as him with a 0 percent drop rate.
In the NFL of 2018, we see a lot more 11 personnel sets used. Even though the Jets want to run the ball more, they will use a lot of 11 personnel. So, even Renfrow becomes a useful draft pick, and he will be a steal in the fifth round.
The Jets can use Renfrow similarly to the way the Patriots use Edelman, quick strikes and precision passing. Given the fact that wide receivers going over the middle get almost the same protection going that quarterbacks do in the pocket, his size should be an issue. Rather, his quickness and hands should trump his size.
