Josh McCown

McCown needs to be re-signed with two things in mind. The price must not be too high (let’s not relive the Ryan Fitzpatrick debacle). Also, it must be with the intent of being the backup.

He had a good season in 2017, but, given his age, it doesn’t warrant becoming the incumbent starter in 2018. This may have been McCown’s best season of his career, but the Jets can’t afford to have what happened with Fitzpatrick all over again. McCown rated highly on most of Pro Football Focus Elite’s metrics.

With all that said, he’s not here just to merely play the veteran tutor role. McCown is not a season-long solution at quarterback if your team has playoff aspirations. He can fill in from time to time, but not start all 16 games.

McCown may be thrust into the starting role, though. (I’ll get into that and the end of this piece in depth.) He shouldn’t go into camp expecting to be the starter, unless things go completely haywire He should be content with being the veteran backup, because what the Jets are going to define his role as in camp. They need to make this clear so they don’t have another Ryan Fitzpatrick-like debacle.
