1. Get a dynamic edge rusher

You win in the NFL when you can get to the quarterback. Plain and simple. Case in point: the top two teams in sacks during the 2017 regular season were the Steelers and Jaguars. They are facing each other in the divisional round this Sunday. There you go. The Jets have not had a dynamic pass rusher since John Abraham from 2000-05. It’s time to get another one.

There are two approaches that New York can take. They can sign a top free agent like Dallas’ DeMarcus Lawrence or Ezekiel Ansah but that will cost them a lot of money. Fortunately for Jets fans, Gang Green has almost $79 million in salary cap room so they can afford to shop at Gucci’s. Lawrence is just 25 years old and Ansah is 28 so both players are in their prime. Signing either one would give New York a premier pass rusher.

The second approach would obviously be via the NFL Draft. Bradley Chubb (NC State), Arden Key (LSU) and Marcus Davenport (Texas-San Antonio) are three players that could be available when the Jets make their first round selection (sixth overall). It’s going to take a first round pick to nab one of those college standouts. Pass rushers are always in demand. Every team wants a good one. That’s why it’s going to cost Gang Green a very high draft pick if they are going to add one via the college route.

Any way you slice it, the Jets have to secure a talented edge rusher this year. They’ll continue to be mired in mediocrity if they don’t.
