What’s Next?

As expected, it was an up and down rookie season for Mitchell Trubisky. The conservative play calling and lack of receiving talent certainly hurt him, yet he showed great confidence on the field and quickly became a leader off the field. Veteran guard Josh Sitton, who played with Aaron Rodgers for eight seasons, says that Trubisky has excellent control of the huddle and isn’t afraid to call players out privately if they are doing the wrong thing.

Trubisky has to learn a whole new playbook this offseason, but given his exceptional work ethic, he should have no problem with it. Playing quarterback in the NFL is not easy for a grizzled veteran, let alone for a rookie quarterback who made only 13 starts in college. Considering everything he had to deal with in 2017, whether it be the Mike Glennon disaster, the ineffectiveness of the coaching staff, or the lack of playmakers surrounding him, Trubisky did a pretty good job.

Having a whole offseason as being “the guy” at quarterback should help Trubisky. Unlike last season, he has no one to compete for snaps with and will get every practice rep with the starters. In addition, Trubisky got drafted in late April, meaning he had only four or five months to learn the playbook and get ready for last season. This year, however, he’ll have eight or nine months to  prepare.

The future is extremely bright for Trubisky, and having Matt Nagy in his corner should expedite his growth. Jared Goff and Carson Wentz made huge strides from their first year in the league to their second, and if the Bears are able to add more talent around him, Trubisky could do the same.
