Josh McDaniels could be particularly helpful in increasing production on offense for the Indianapolis Colts as he’s expected to be the next head coach.

Josh McDaniels is taking his talents to Indianapolis. The Indianapolis Colts are expected to hire the New England Patriots offensive coordinator to be their next head coach, per multiple media reports. McDaniels already has some of his staff picked out as well. Cowboys assistant Matt Eberflus is expected to become the defensive coordinator on McDaniels’ staff.

The 41-year old has already tried his hand at being a head coach, having served in that capacity with the Denver Broncos. Spanning two seasons (2009-10), he compiled an 11-17 record. However, since coming back to New England, he has won a pair of Super Bowls and has shown that he is one of the brighter minds in the game.

Colts fans should be excited about this hire. For one, he has worked with Tom Brady. Although McDaniels probably will not be able to make his quarterbacks play at the same level Brady has, he can share some knowledge. In particular, the former has coached in some big games over the course of his career, so he adds experience in that area. It is expected that Andrew Luck will be ready to return in 2018, and McDaniels’ combination of knowledge and experience could help Luck bounce back.

The Colts as a team have players that can make an impact immediately. A healthy Andrew Luck, TY Hilton, Donte Moncrief and Jack Doyle can instantly bring a spark to the offense. Defensively however, it is no secret that the Colts need to improve. The Colts ranked at the bottom of the league defensively in 2017 ranking No. 28 in the entire league. They gave up 347 total points and 23.1 points per game (tied with Cleveland.)

If I were Eberflus, I would focus on rushing the passer and coverage drills. The Colts ranked at the bottom of the league defensively in 2017 ranking No. 28 in the entire league. They gave up 347 total points and 23.1 points per game (tied with Cleveland.) Additionally, they were ranked No. 31 in the league with 23 sacks. If Indianapolis can improve their defense just a bit, they can become a force in the AFC South once again.

McDaniels had an excellent tenure in New England and that cannot be ignored. Now, he is ready to show that he can become one of the best head coaches in the league.
